Competing water needs threaten world's future
"We are taking from tomorrow's agriculture to produce for today," Sandra Postel, director, Global Water Policy Project told 850 scientists, specialists and students from the US and the world at the 2002 World Food Prize Symposium in Des Moines on Thursday. "Globally, we are moving into a period of unprecedented water stress." she said. "One of the greatest challenges ahead is satisfying the water and food demands at the same time as protecting the world's ecology."...more
The 10 U.S. states with “bottle bills” -- laws that encourage recycling by requiring a refundable deposit on beer, soft drink and other beverage containers -- recycle 70 percent of their drink containers (including bottles that do not require a deposit). States with no deposit law recycle less than 30 percent of theirs.
